The new Revelle Model 600 is probably the nicest violin we have seen in its price range. As an orchestral violin, it is an intermediate to advanced instrument. The woods are beautiful: close-grained spruce top and well flamed back and sides. The workmanship is first rate. The ebony tuning pegs work flawlessly. Of course, the pegs can be replaced with Wittner FineTune planetary pegs. It's elegant rounded shape is based on a Stradivari pattern.
This full-size Revelle instrument is strung with Thomastik-Infeld Vision strings, a Despiau bridge, well-seasoned ebony fittings (closed-grained), Hill style e-string fine-tuner, and more.
The varnish is perfect. We would describe it as elegantly-antiqued. We suspect that it is spirit varnished (dried fast without having to use a UV chamber…I.e. More cost effective); however, it has the look of hand rubbed Italian oil varnish, including the rub marks of what looks like a pigment glaze in one or more of the layers rather than dye-based stain used in spirit varnishing. These hand-rubbing marks are part of the beauty of Italian varnishing. So, it could be oil varnished after all.
The tone is deliciously dark and powerful; although not quite as focused as a more expensive professional performance instrument. Many, especially intermediate level fiddlers, will probably love the Model 600 set up for fiddling, as a dark and only moderately focused tone is more forgiving to those who have not mastered advanced bowing dynamics. In fact, many advanced fiddlers prefer a dark and moderately focused sound. We have brought these instruments to fiddlers' conventions and it is a favorite.
